Otimkpu is Coming

This is an exploration of masquerade as a representation of a collective voice in contemporary Nigerian life. This project addresses themes of vocal expression and collective lamentation, reflecting the public's response to economic hardships, political disappointments, and social media discourse. It critiques and reimagines "the Nigerian ideal," prompting reflection on our national aspirations and realities.

Otimkpu means 'cry' or 'one who eulogizes another’, representing collective voice-both wailing and protesting. It honors the New Nigerian ideal, asking: How do we envision ourselves? What do we hope to achieve as citizens?

The artist— Yadichinma Ukoha-kalu— created the work during the two month residency at kroneworld in collaboration with whatiftheworld gallery.

Yadi showed what a contemporary Nigerian masquerade could embody with “Otimpku is Coming”.
